Women always seem to be in search of the BEST sports bra for their fitness needs. We featured this product review last year and it was a hit. So why not share it again?
This is a big topic to tackle, but we’re talking bras here today. We gotta take care of the girls when we’re exercising and I’ve been on the hunt for the best bras for doing CrossFit. We do a lot of varying movements in CrossFit, from box jumps to double unders to barbell moves, and while not every WOD requires a heavy duty bra, we do want to make sure the girls don’t bounce.
I (Amy) am on the bustier side so not any ‘ol bra will do. When I was a runner I used to wear TWO bras to stop the bounce, but in CrossFit I want to be able to move without feeling suffocated by two bras. So, I started trying different bras out and while this list is not comprehensive, I have tried them out in a variety of CrossFit WOD’s. There are two things I look for when shopping for workout bras: 1) comfort 2) no booby bounce when jumping. I don’t even look at price because sports bras are just expensive and there’s little difference in pricing among the brands except for Target.
Speaking of Target, let’s start with the sports bras from them. To be honest, I love these bras for everyday use and things like yoga, but they are really only effective if your bust is on the smaller side of things. They are great for barbell WOD’s where no jumping is required because there isn’t really much support.
Target has introduced their Champion line of sports bras for high impact workouts and they fare better. The only complaint is that while it’s a puller over style bra, it also has hook and eye closures! Why? This makes it impossible to put on while alone because after pulling it over your head, how are you supposed to also clasp the closure?
I then tried Lululemon bras. Now, I LOVE everything about Lululemon and most of my workout shorts are from them, but I have not been happy with their bras. Again, if your chest is smaller, their bras will probably suite you fine, but their high impact bras have been my least favorite of all. I feel like I’m wearing a vest when I have it on and after several washings, every single one of these bras has lost a hook and eye on the closure. Their bras are so cute in the light support category, but slowly get ugly in the medium to high support choices. Please Lululemon, make cute bras for high impact sports!!
Now, Reebok has been genius about their line of apparel just for CrossFitters and their bras are no exception. They get CrossFit and understand all the functional moves that are done in any WOD. I have not tried all of their bras, but these two are awesome! The girls don’t move and you also don’t feel like you’re in a straight jacket!
My favorite bra comes from Under Armour. I first picked up an Under Armour bra at their outlet store, but it quickly became the one I kept wearing so I ended up getting several more. I love that it’s a pullover style bra and that it not only holds the girls tight, but does it without suffocating me!
As I said in the beginning of this post, if you are on the smaller chest size, you probably can wear any bra you want without much issue, but still, when it comes to CrossFit, you need a bra that functions in dozens of different situations. The bra I wear to a spin class doesn’t need to do the same job as the one I wear to do handstands!
The two brands that I have not tested are Nike bras and Athleta. I plan on ordering bras from both companies this summer and will give you an update on how they perform. Do you have a favorite sports bra? Pipe in and let me know your thoughts about sports bras and if you have a brand that I must try!
