I love this question because of the Registered Nurse in me. Yep, that was the first part of my life, but it all changed when I had twins. So, I’m a 40ish mom of teenage boy and girl twins, I’m a Virgo, which makes me a little bit Type A. I’m also super short but have Shakira beat by 3 inches!
Numerically speaking, I’m a 50-year old (OMG…did I just say that?) recovering Type A personality, married for 24 years with 2 teenage boys. I’m an overthinking scorpio who didn’t discover the joy of stepping out of my comfort zone until my mid 40’s. Oh yeah, and I’m short, although I’ve got Amy beat by almost 3 inches.
Geez, this could take forever. I really am a Registered Nurse and served as a Navy Nurse for 6 years. I spent several years working in medical sales and then moved onto a direct sales company.
When the twins came along I stayed home until 2007, when I started a small professional organizing company, Simplified Living, which I still own.
Once in a while I dabble in nursing to keep my skill set and use my brain, but I mostly write about home management, parenting, and organizing on my personal blog, AmyVolk.com
I’ve spent most of my adult life working the retail industry in one form or another, first running other people’s businesses, then partnering with my husband to run our own business.
Once my first son was born, I took the next 11 years practicing the art (or is it science?) of parenting.
The drastic change in the economy forced me back into the workforce sooner than I would have chosen, but as fate would have it, I discovered the benefits of running of my own business once again in direct sales.
Most recently, I began writing about life on my blog Discover Your Awesomeness.
Cave Mamas encompasses a woman on the Paleo lifestyle and CrossFit journey or any fitness journey for that matter. Most of us who do CrossFit also eat the Paleo way, but Cave Mama takes it a step further and adds the mom factor in.
I have always loved fitness and eating clean, but diving into a Paleo lifestyle has not only changed my body, but cleared up my acne, my bloating, and yes, even my mood swings.
All of that sent me on the journey to start CrossFit again (yes, I had tried it when the twins were small) and the combination of the two has allowed me to be in the best shape of my life starting in my 40’s!
Paleo eating is often called the caveman diet, but I am clearly a cavewoman! And a mama, so there you go!
My journey to Cave-Mama-ness is long and at times emotionally painful. Certainly enough content for a book or maybe a soap opera. But I’ll opt for the cliff notes version instead.
I’ve lived a yo-yo lifestyle of repetitively gaining and losing weight since I was 16 years old. Regardless of the number on the scale, I’ve never had a positive body image, and my relationship with food was abusive at best. Hitting rock bottom for the umpteenth time in the fall of 2012, I followed a friend’s lead and took my first CrossFit class.
There’s a strong connection between CrossFit and living a Paleo lifestyle, also known as the cave man diet, so I quickly began dabbling in Paleo. Just 4 months later, I went all in and haven’t looked back since. My body shape and size changed drastically since then, but most importantly, who I am on the inside changed more than how I look.
I no longer have an abusive relationship with food, instead, I eat when I’m hungry and I stop when I’m satisfied (not stuffed!). Now in my late 50’s, I’m in the best shape of my life and my new motto is “Strong is the New Skinny” (and sexy). Combine my Crossfit and Paleo living with being a mom, and you’ve got a cave mama!
Fate! In 2009 my husband was relocating his business and needed some serious help getting his office re-organized. I discovered Amy’s organizing business through a google search, and our first face to face rendez vous was in an Applebee’s parking lot so I could purchase a consultation gift certificate from her.
It was friend-love at first sight! It didn’t hurt that she was wearing a pair of earrings from the direct sales company I was working with. Over the next few years we had occasional contact through our respective businesses. But in February 2012, I found myself at a major crossroad in my business.
Knowing that Amy had been down a similar direct sales path, I called and asked her to meet me for coffee. Instead, she met me for a CrossFit class first, followed by a yummy Starbucks. Little did we know that our 2 hour meeting would turn into an incredible friendship and business partnership.
Amy quickly joined the CrossFit box (gym in CrossFit lingo) and we’ve been (as my husband says) inseparable ever since. Our differences are striking at times, and yet we connect like long lost sisters. With a common background in entrepreneurship, a growing passion for CrossFit & Paleo, and our overall desire to be healthy, fit and strong in mind, body and spirit, our partnership was a no brainer!
Ditto to that!
Any woman can! While I didn’t discover Paleo and CrossFit until I was already a mom, I believe this way of life can improve every woman’s body. We aren’t looking to be skinny, but strong and healthy and sexy.
I can tell you that being a Cave Mama is much more than just Paleo and CrossFit. It’s about starting to love your body and treat it well, both in whole foods and nutrition and movement. Some of us add yoga, spinning, Pilates, and running to our CrossFit workouts and some Cave Mama’s don’t do CrossFit at all!
The Cave Mama tribe isn’t a clique or club. We don’t require an application process for admittance. You can’t be accepted or denied access. Any woman (or man, if they want) can simply choose to be a Cave Mama by virtue of their desire to take care of themselves – their mind, body and soul!
While we speak from our CrossFit and Paleo experience, you may select the movement and fitness of your choice (yoga, pilates, zumba, boot camp etc) and eating Paleo comes in many different hues. The underlying philosophy of being a Cave Mama is having the courage to accept (LOVE) yourself exactly where you, while at the same time, creating the discipline and commitment to be a better you.
