My goal is to do CrossFit 3-4 times a week and then do other things like yoga, spin, Pilates, or biking. I can fit it all in if my week goes as planned and no surprises happen. Ha! Then throw in traveling and all the plans go out the window!
Lately, my best laid plans have been thwarted by my kids sports activities, spring break travel, and business travel. There have been days when I literally had ONE hour in the middle of the day to workout or when traveling, trying to make do with what the hotels have and still get a CrossFit WOD completed.
It’s easy to say, “Just forget it, or “It’s only one workout I’ll miss”, but instead of doing that I got creative with how I worked out when I traveled or needed to WOD at home. Here are my favorite CrossFit Travel Tips…
1. Use Travel Apps-
I have used both CrossFit Travel and The Traveling WOD when I have been out of town. None of their workouts require equipments so you can literally do them in your hotel room. I’ve even done them in a driveway! Here’s an example of today’s traveling WOD.
The CrossFit Travel App has a ton of WOD’s that you can pick by time or endurance and even comes with a timer built in the app and a place to record your results. I use this one a lot!
2. Use What You Have-
Over the years we have built up a little home gym with things like dumbbells, a treadmill, resistance bands, and a ton of DVD’s. We recently added weighted medicine balls and an AbMat for sit ups.
So, when I have to, I workout out at home. Sometimes I will use the travel apps to do a WOD in my home and other times I put a DVD in. Look around your home and see what it would take to make a small home gym. It’s worth investing in a few things so you can workout without excuse! Here’s a quick video of what I did in my home just the other day when I couldn’t get to the box.

3. Be Creative and just do it!
The hardest part of fitting fitness in while traveling is the inconvenience of a hotel gym or when staying at someones house. Stay committed to your workout plan, even if the circumstances are weird, by being creative and just doing it.
I have brought workout DVD’s with me to a hotel and played them on my laptop! Push the furniture to the side a little and just go for it! You’re neighbor might wonder what’s going on, but nothing is easier than not having to leave your room. Right now, the P90X3 DVD’s are my favorite (only 30 minutes each and lots of CrossFit like moves), but I have many others that I have loved and still use.
When staying with friends, I have done the same, but gone in another room with the laptop and done a quick DVD workout. When push comes to shove you can always go for a walk and do 10 burpees every 5 minutes of your walk or run if you like to run! The whole idea is that you move your body purposefully with some exertion.
Traveling doesn’t have to mean that you abandon all your efforts to stay fit. As you can see, I’ve done workouts in some pretty strange circumstances but I’m always so glad I did it! Being a little prepared and staying flexible helps to squash any excuses to not workout.
