One of the most important things I’ve found to successfully living a Paleo lifestyle, is to be prepared! We can control our food options within our cave (aka – home), but once we venture out into the real world, filled with fast food, mini marts, and food courts, we risk the possibility of either passing out from hunger or being forced to make a not so Paleo food choice…..unless we are prepared!
I’ve been in Colorado all week – on a 2-part family adventure. The first part revolved around some wild and crazy Rocky Mountain activities….while the 2nd part entailed moving our oldest son into his freshman dorm at the University of Colorado.
Without some preparation, I would have succumbed to airplane snacks (mini pretzels and butter cookies), rat poison in my coffee (splenda) and unbearable empty stomach nausea on the van ride back from white water rafting. Thankfully I had a zip lock bag filled with my “must have” travel goodies!
So here are my on-the-go snacks, whether I’m spending the day out and about around town….or I’m traveling half way across the country:
Lara Bars – my personal favorite is the peanut butter cookie and my most recent find are these new mini Lara Bars which are just under half the size of a regular bar, perfect for when you need a little something to hold you over.
Stevia – while there are many brands of stevia, Sweet Leaf is my favorite. Sadly, it’s not commonly stocked at coffee shops or restaurants. So I travel with individual size packets to add to my coffee or iced tea.
Almond Butter – this individual size travel packet is perfect to compliment an apple or banana, which could make a filling breakfast or a satisfying in between meal snack.
Trail Mix – while it’s not too difficult to find pre-packaged trail mix, I prefer to make my own combination of cashews, almonds and organic dried cranberries.
Fruit strips – I LOVE these, especially the apricot ones. They satisfy my desire for something a little sweet and a little chewy.
Having a vacation mentality combined with a little emotional eating (that’s a whole different blog post!), I definitely made some less than Paleo food choices this week. The Colorado micro brewed beer was delicious, especially paired with some pizza!
And it wouldn’t be a summer vacation without an ice cream splurge (or two)! But these were choices I made, not food I was forced to eat because I had no other options. Being prepared with healthy choice snacks allows me to choose, which is empowering! While I’m not ready to leave my happy place (Colorado) – I AM ready to get back to my cave and get cooking again!
