My name is Karen, I am 51 years old, married with three amazing children. Here is my CrossFit story:
I have always struggled with my weight. Throughout my life I have tried numerous workout videos, fad diets, regular gyms, treadmills, zumba, kickboxing classes, and even suffered 11 years with Anorexia and Bulemia, in an attempt to be “thin and attractive”. Even with all the activity (including playing 3 sports in high school) and “dieting”, I could not keep my weight under control. So I eventually gave up trying and literally started packing on the pounds. Then I discovered the CrossFit Lifestyle. The before picture you see was the start of it all. I didn’t recognize the woman in the picture and I decided that enough was finally enough, and something had to be done! My son had been doing CrossFit for a few months and had amazing results, so I tried it.
When I showed up for my first CrossFit WOD in 2011, at 48 years old and weighing 285 pounds, I couldn’t run 20 yards without being completely out of breath. I couldn’t jump up on a 3 inch platform. I couldn’t do a push up, a pull up, or a sit up…let alone any of the things the other people were doing. But something clicked, and I made the decision to just do it! Either the WOD would kill me or being obese and unhealthy would kill me, so what did I have to lose? I went back the next day and the next day, and the next….I was hooked.
Thanks to CrossFit and the Paleo diet, I dropped 140 pounds and 8 sizes in a 13 months….and I began to do things I had never been able to do in my whole entire life. I complete 5K and 10K runs, rope climbs, 24 inch box jumps, handstands and more. Now, I lift weights I never thought possible (including a 300 lb. deadlift!) Not only do I keep up with people half my age, sometimes I even faster than them. I no longer have any eating disorders, and I am completely off all the depression medications I had been prescribed for years!
In December of 2012 I earned my CrossFit Level 1 Trainer Certification followed by my Crossfit Kids Trainer Certification in April of 2013. I have also started competing in USAPL Powerlifting competitions!
The self-confidence, self-reliance, energy, stamina, desire, motivation, and drive I have gained from my exposure to CrossFit has positively affected every aspect of my life in and outside of the “box”. The people I have met through CrossFit are unlike any others! We are a team, a family, a community. We sweat, bleed, cry, encourage, motivate, and share a bond with each other that no one outside of the box will ever understand.
CrossFit literally saved my life. I am hoping that sharing my story will inspire others to take their life back and be healthy!
