What is CrossFit?
The technical, and somewhat universal response to this question is…..
CrossFit is constantly varied, high intensity, functional movement designed for universal scalability. Easy for me to say, right? So what exactly does this mean?
*Constantly varied – is always changing, not predictable.
*High intensity – is moving in the highest gear you are capable of, each and every time you move.
*Functional movement – are skills, motions and actions that can translate into your every day life.
*Universal scalability – means each movement or skill has a scalable version to fit any individual’s current ability and skill level.
What this REALLY means is…
*Constantly varied – you never get bored, because each day brings a new WOD (workout of the day) pairing a variety of skills or lifts in an ever changing combination. It’s like ordering a mystery sampler platter instead of an entree for dinner.
*High intensity – you work really, really hard. You work harder than you ever imagined possible. Then you work just a little bit harder. It’s supposed to be hard – if it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it.
*Functional movement – you can carry 3 loads of laundry down the stairs at one time, you can throw a 40 pound bag of dog food over your shoulder and transport it from your car to the pantry, and you can keep up with either your toddler or your teenager – without needing to pause and catch your breath.
*Universal scalability – everyone and anyone can do CrossFit!
CrossFit offers a fitness program that is intended to be broad, general, and inclusive. It is known for not specializing in any one component or aspect of fitness, such that you won’t be the best at one thing, but rather you’ll be better at many things.
What makes CrossFit Unique?
Part of what makes CrossFit so unique is the community that is created when people complete the workouts together. The CrossFit culture is similar to that of a family (hopefully one with little dysfunction!). There is support, encouragement and unconditional love. It’s a team atmosphere that makes you better as an individual.
Although you probably wouldn’t find CrossFit defined as such, our experience is that the CrossFit journey is filled with life lessons that are magnified in the box (CrossFit term for gym), but naturally and easily translate into every day life. So CrossFit strengthens both your body and your mind! Try it….you just might like it (or become addicted to it like we have!)
